Garry Borders

When Beneficial Financial Group presented Spokane Agency Manager Garry E. Borders, CLU, ChFC, M.B.A., with its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, Beneficial President and CEO Kent H. Cannon said, “In addition to providing excellent service to his own clients, Garry is a superb coach, mentor, and trainer of other agents. He has helped many financial professionals to be successful in this industry.”

“I truly care about my clients,” says Garry. “The Borders Team—my son, Matthew, and I—focus on the individual. We know firsthand the challenges that come with raising a family, accumulating money, and losing a loved one. Through this experience and our professional financial knowledge, we’re driven to help individuals discover their full financial potential and fulfill their hopes and dreams. We provide ongoing support for our clients, which creates long-term relationships of trust with them.”

Garry is regarded in his business community as a leading professional. He started as a life insurance agent in 1973 and helped start Beneficial’s Spokane Agency in Washington State in 1978. He became full-time assistant manager in 1985 and has been Agency Manager since 1997. New Agents of the Year came from Garry’s unit in 1988, 1991, and 1996, and he was Mentor of the Year in 1992 and 1994. Garry has been a consistent Sales Conference qualifier since 1986. “It’s been a privilege to be associated with Beneficial all of these years, and I don’t believe there’s a better career opportunity in the industry than what’s available today with Beneficial Financial Group,” says Garry.

Professional education is crucial, Garry believes. He has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Washington State University and a master’s degree in business administration. In addition to having the Certified Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) professional designations, he is a registered representative and an investment advisor representative with Beneficial Investment Services, Inc.

Garry has been an instructor in finance and marketing at St. Martin’s College in Lacey, Washington, and a guest lecturer in marketing at Eastern Washington University. He is also a member of the Omicron Delta Epsilon Economics Honor Society. Garry ensures that all producers and staff at his agency are offered training in financial services.

He has been an instructor on estate planning at his local CLU chapter and has served as President of the Spokane Chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals. He has been a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) for over 25 years and a member of the Million Dollar Round Table.

Community service is a way of life for Garry. “I believe that honest, committed service is the only way to work with others,” says Garry. He served as a graduate student senator at Washington State University, director of fund raising for the United Way at St. Martin’s College, precinct committee chairman for his political party, and president of the local PTA. He was president of the Parent Advisory Organization at a local high school and is a member of the Parent Advisory Council for School District 81. He was chairman of the committee to create Hillyard Pioneer Local Community Garden in 1997. He was a member of the editorial advisory board of The Spokesman Review newspaper in Spokane from 1994 to 1997. Garry is also active in leadership and service roles in his church. Garry and his wife Sue are the parents of 6 children and 13 grandchildren.

“People who work hard all their lives deserve to enjoy their future with their families and friends and to pursue their hobbies and interests,” says Garry. “Whether your goal is to enjoy a comfortable retirement, send a child off to college, or protect your family at the death of a loved one, the Borders Team is here to help you reach your goal.”

Don Jones

Professional, ethical service has been the hallmark of the service of Don M. Jones, CLU, ChFC, to his Beneficial clients in the Denver area for the past 35 years. When Beneficial President and CEO Kent H. Cannon presented Don with the Company’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, he said, “In his over three decades with Beneficial, Don has consistently demonstrated the Company’s unwavering commitment to our core values and the highest professional standards and reputation.” These core values include integrity, financial security and growth, teamwork, and accountability.

“I’m very committed to the importance of life insurance in people’s lives,” says Don. “I believe in it so strongly-that’s why I’m still in the business past the normal retirement age. At this stage of my career, I’m settling 3-5 death claims per year, with total claims in the millions of dollars. So I see firsthand how vital this money is to the surviving family members to help them with funeral expenses, estate taxes, mortgage payments, and many other things. Life insurance provides the money when it’s needed most. In addition to the money, we provide personalized service to people at a critical time in their lives—no one in the financial industry services people like we do. There’s just no substitute for life insurance and the kind of service you receive from a life insurance professional”

Don does for his clients what he would want done for himself and his family. He reviews his clients’ needs annually and is in regular communication with them. Don settles all death claims with a personal delivery and personally handles all policyowner service requests, with the help of his administrative assistant. Don has settled many death claims, including those of his own daughter, daughter-in-law, his personal secretary and, most recently, his son. He knows the human value involved in the business, and he promotes good will, trust, and warmth in his relationships with his clients. Because of this, Don has many lasting friendships with his clients, reflected in his nearly 100 percent persistency for many years (Don retains almost all of his clients).

Don joined the financial services industry in 1965 and started with Beneficial in 1972. He served as the Beneficial Agency Manager for 7 years in the Denver area and has been a consistent Sales Conference qualifier and has frequently been a Century Club qualifier. Don has regularly presented seminars on estate strategies and retirement planning. He has been instrumental in recruiting and mentoring several Beneficial financial professionals and has supported the training and education seminars that Beneficial holds.

Industry knowledge and continuing education are fundamental to the kind of professional service Don provides. Don holds the Certified Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) professional designations and is a registered representative and investment advisor representative with Beneficial Investment Services, Inc. He is a member of the PACE program, which is the education requirement for the Society of Financial Service Professionals. Don attends the annual meetings for the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) and his monthly association meetings, and he takes advantage of the CLU seminars sponsored several times each year.

Don has been a member of MDRT for 38 years, is an MDRT life and qualifying member and is in the MDRT Quarter Century Club and on its Honor Roll. He has served in his local National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) in all positions, from secretary to president, and is a member of the Society of Financial Service Professionals. Don has received the National Sales Achievement Award for over 25 years and the National Quality Award for over 15 years.

Don’s national and community service includes service as a U.S. Marine during the Korean War. He is a past board member of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, a current MS annual drive fundraiser, and a participant in the annual March of Dimes. Don has been involved with several city organizations in Aurora, Colorado. Don is very active in leadership and service roles in his church. In April 2008 Don joined 12 other Beneficial agents and their guests on a service expedition to a small, remote village in Guatemala, where they helped villagers remodel and expand a school and assisted in medical and dental clinics provided by Beneficial. “This was one of the most outstanding projects I have ever been involved with,” says Don. He and his wife Shirley have 5 children, 15 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.
