Example IRA
Let's look at an example in which an initial $2,000 is placed into an IRA earning 7.25 percent and an additional $2,000 is added each consecutive year. After just ten years, the IRA is worth $30,139. (No taxes are due until the funds are withdrawn.) The same initial amount in a non-tax-deferred vehicle, at the same interest, yields only $26,261. After 40 years the earnings are more dramatic. The IRA is worth $327,812, while the non-tax-deferred account is worth $188,940 (assuming an individual with a 28 percent tax bracket).
